Music Beyond Borders crosses more than international lines with this year’s featured artists, the Brasil Guitar Duo. This is an event that is sure to bring out the whole community with the duo’s stylish blend of traditional and Brazilian concert guitar. Whether you enjoy contemporary guitar, or have a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of more classical pieces, you’ll be amazed by their impressive skills and the beautiful music they create. João Luiz and Douglas Lora met in São Paulo as guitar students, and have been perfecting their performance duet for over twelve years, demonstrating a natural mastery and connection to their music. As the 2006 winner of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, the duo has graced many stages world-wide. Their studio recordings have received great praise--American Record Guide states, “It would be hard to imagine a better performance...This is wonderful music played at the highest interpretive level.”
A 2006 winner of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, the Brasil Guitar Duo was hailed by Classical Guitar magazine for its "maturity of musicianship and technical virtuosity." It is equally at home on a classical or a world-music series, and its innovative programming features a seamless blend of traditional and Brazilian works, resulting in a full global touring schedule and a growing catalogue of critically acclaimed recordings.

Music Beyond Borders Series
In an effort to expand beyond the concert hall and bring great music to venues throughout the community, the Stockton Symphony created Music Beyond Borders. In 2011 the Symphony was proud to present the Sphinx Virtuosi, eighteen members of the top alumni of the Sphinx Competition for talented young African-American and Latino musicians. The Sphinx Virtuosi added Stockton to their tour schedule, just days after their Carnegie Hall performance. Sphinx's overarching mission is to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through performances of varied repertoire.
