Few cities in California’s Central Valley can match the environmental stewardship of Stockton. “Green” is a hot topic here. As one of the first cities in the area committed to reducing climate change, the city of Stockton has initiated a number of programs that will cut energy and water consumption and lessen the city’s carbon footprint. The amount of trash sent to landfills has been greatly reduced. Stockton farmers markets have expanded throughout the city. Such activities not only make Stockton a more viable place to live – but also a preferred travel destination . • Creating mixed use residential and commercial developments that encourage pedestrian and bike traffic.
• Moving to a new “green” City Hall, and supporting the construction of more “green” residential and commercial developments.
• Incorporating LEED principles into renovations and new buildings.
• Replacing city vehicles with new low-emission vehicles such as gas-electric hybrids and bio-diesel fuel vehicles.
• Implementing water conservation efforts including storm water management that impacts both business and residential customers.
• Installing damaged sidewalks with rubberized sidewalks that utilizes recycled waste tires.
• In 2006, the Chamber formed the “Green Team San Joaquin ”, a public/private partnership that links the business community to the green community. Activities include visiting local business to advise on better green and energy conservation policies, hosting an annual Energy & Clean Air Exposition and REXPO , and working with businesses to find resources to assist diverting recyclable materials from local landfills.

• Many local hotels follow green practices and have initiated water conservation, recycling, and purchasing policies. They might also offer “green” meeting space if yours is a green organization.
