OPENING RECEPTION: May 1, 1 - 4 pm Still Life demo begins at 1:30pm

The still life is often ignored in today’s art market but the Knowlton Gallery is pleased to be bringing together a strong group of painters who will be exploring still life and interior landscapes, in oil, watercolor, and pastel.

Gay Faulkenberry, a well-regarded still life artist from Oklahoma, will be joined in the show by Ray Roberts, Kathleen Dunphy, Janette Jones and Peggi Kroll-Roberts, from the Sierra Foothills; Lucinda Kasser and Gil Dellinger from Stockton, CA; Carolyn Lord, from Livermore, CA; Deladier Almeida, from Davis, CA; Juan Peña from the Sacramento region; and Clark Mitchell from Petaluma, CA.

This is what Kathleen Dunphy has to say about painting the still life:

"I love the excitement of standing outdoors and painting plein air, but sometimes it's a nice change of pace to slow down and paint a still life. It's a more controlled, quiet process, and the act of painting becomes almost meditative. I've always been fascinated with glass and collect various colors and sizes of glass vessels to use in my paintings. The task of depicting transparency while still showing a solid form endlessly challenges me."
