The Reynolds Gallery at the University of the Pacific is proud to announce the opening of its next exhibition: Words, Tones, Notions: 40 Years of Print, Illustration and Design of Czech artist Alena Nievaldová. The show will open on Monday October 21, with a public reception on Thursday, October 24 from 6 – 8pm.
In her work, Nievaldová weaves the disciplines of art, design and illustration seamlessly together. She earned her Master’s Degree in Bookmaking and Typography at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in the 1970s. After graduation she created numerous book illustrations and film posters, and designed books and book covers. She creates illustrations using printmaking techniques, primarily woodcuts and wood engraving, as well as drawing in pen and ink, and gouache in a blend of the hand drawn and digital. Layouts from her book illustrations showcasing her vigorous line work, including a particularly charming octopus, as well as book plate carvings and numerous examples of her graphic design work for spoken word and music CDs are on display.
In the 1990s Nievaldová founded a graphic studio called JanAltonDesign, which focused on promotional graphics. Her clients included Czech Philharmonic, Czech National Theater, Prague State Opera, Supraphon, Radioservis, IC Bank, Banco Popolare, ING Bank, PWC, Staropramen, American Express and Nike.
An opening reception will take place on Thursday, October 24 from 6 to 8 PM. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. The exhibition is on view October 21 through December 13. The Jeannette Powell Art Center and Reynolds Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.
