Delta Drama presents Sophie Treadwell's "Machinal"

Overview

Nearly a century ago, the New York Times declared of Sophie Treadwell’s groundbreaking masterpiece, Machinal, that "in a hundred years...[the play] should still be vital and vivid." Today, almost 100 years later, in Treadwell’s hometown of Stockton, CA, Delta Drama proudly brings that prediction to life.

Written in 1929, this shockingly ahead-of-its-time feminist play remains a rare, searing jewel of American theatre. Based on the true story of Ruth Snyder, Treadwell distills the claustrophobia of a mechanized society. Machinal uses a striking expressionistic style rhythmically "scored" with sound effects to heighten every raw emotional beat to tell the gripping story of a Young Woman searching for freedom in an unyielding world. Electrifying, raw, and prescient, this historic production proves Treadwell’s masterpiece hasn't lost a single spark of its power. Experience a hometown legend’s visionary classic right here in Stockton!
