Acquiesce Winery is Lodi’s ONLY all white wine winery!
Why is Acquiesce Winery growing white Rhone-style grapes in Zin country? In 2005, Susan Tipton, Acquiesce Winery’s founder and winemaker, happened upon a beautiful white Châteauneuf-du-Pape and found it the most delicious wine she had ever tasted. Thus began her journey to craft these fantastic wines. Since Lodi has a climate similar to the Rhone region, Susan sourced cuttings from the famous Château de Beaucastel in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of France for her first Grenache Blanc plantings. Thrilled by the union of these special vines and Lodi’s sandy loam soils, Susan says, “These wines speak to me . . . it was like finding a secret recipe. We acquiesce to the vineyard allowing its true personality to shape the wine.”
Her loyal customers must agree, as within a few short months after opening the tasting room in their century-old barn, they were sold out of their award winning wines. Now they’ve re-opened and Susan’s tasting room features her Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Rosé and with only 100 vines, a new wine called Picpoul Blanc.
Susan must be on to something! When famous wine expert, Oz Clarke visited Lodi in 2011, here’s what he said about wine grapes in Lodi, “The thing about Lodi wines is that they have a softness in texture and an intensity of fruit. You can really taste the difference in fruit varieties in Lodi wine. Lodi is different. There is something here. You look at the maps with the Delta and the hills and you see how the wind comes through the Carquinez Strait and the first place it gets is here. . . But you in Lodi have this small area. That’s the great thing about wine; small areas matter. Napa and Carneros aren’t big. You have very sandy loams for soil. And loam basically means you can’t ripen Bordeaux. . . But you should be making rosé and looking at white wines.”
